You Can’t Miss Autumn at Manning Park

It’s that time of year when the leaves are changing, the larches up on Mount Frosty are turning their golden hue, and the stars are shining bright in the autumn sky.

Many people are taking the annual fall pilgrimage up Mt. Frosty to see the golden larches. This 22km high alpine trail offers stunning mountain views and a larch forest. The trees are now in full ‘golden bloom’ and it is prime time to hike up the mountain.  At the end of September to mid-October, the 2000+-year-old larch trees on Mount Frosty turn to gold before their needles fall off for the season. It is a stunning experience! Share your golden larch tree photos on Facebook & Instagram with the hashtag #ManningParkLarches!

The Mount Frosty trail is the only place to view these unique larch trees, but there are other opportunities to see the autumn colours in Manning Park.

There are great colours in Sumallo Grove along Highway #3, just east of Sunshine Valley, and the Cascade Lookout provides a great overview of the autumn colours around Manning Park Resort. For some longer hikes, try checking out the Lightning Lake trail or Skyline to view some of the great colours.

When you are planning your outdoor adventures this fall, it’s important to be prepared. Autumn can be a great time to explore, but if you’re heading to high alpine environments remember that conditions can change rapidly. Learn how to “get informed and go outdoors” from AdventureSmart.

Fall Fun at Manning Park

mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, and stargazing

mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, and stargazing

The nights are getting colder and the days are getting shorter, but there are still many adventures to be had and many memories to be made this fall at Manning Park.

Take part in one of these great activities when you visit Manning Park this fall:

Boat Rentals: Our boathouse is open throughout the fall (weather and activity levels permitting) so you can explore Lightning Lake and the surrounding fall foliage via canoe, kayak, and stand up paddleboard. Make sure to check the hours of operation before you come.

Hiking: The trails are calling, and there’s nothing more stunning than a walk through a forest of changing leaves. The trails quiet down and you can often find yourself completely alone and at peace on the trail. The famous larches up on Mount Frosty will start to change at the end of September into their incredible golden glory, so be sure not to miss out.

Stargazing: As the days get shorter, the stars come out earlier! The Dark Sky in Manning Park offers some of the best stargazing around. With multiple viewing locations and very limited light pollution, the views are incredible. You can also rent a telescope from the front desk to enhance your stargazing experience.

Mountain Biking: Explore the park on 2 wheels! Take your pick of breathtaking trails; there is something for every age and experience level.

Know Before You Go:

As the Icelandic people say; “There is no bad weather, just bad clothing!” The weather changes quickly up here in the mountains, so make sure to check the conditions before you come, dress appropriately, and bring extra layers.

Happy Adventuring!

Astronomy Weekend at Manning Park Resort Draws Enthusiastic Crowds

The stars aligned for Manning Park Resort’s first Astronomy Weekend from October 12- 14th. With clear, cloudless skies and a full weekend itinerary of events, the first Manning Park Dark Sky Astronomy Weekend drew over 250 people to gaze upwards towards the stars.

Star experts from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) in Vancouver shared their knowledge with eager astronomers of all levels at multiple stargazing locations on Friday and Saturday nights. The weekend highlight included a shuttle bus trip to the Cascade Lookout which offers impressive mountain views during the day, and endless skies at night.

Combining educational and cultural events, indoor sessions throughout the weekend covered astrophotography, observational astronomy and how to locate and chart asteroids. Families were kept active with kid-friendly astronomy themed crafts, solar viewing, a walking tour of stories of constellations and yoga under the stars.

Catherine Laird, a participant in the Cascade Stargazer package said, “It was a fascinating and inspirational weekend!”

The Fraser Valley Regional Library provided telescopes for the event, to promote their new Telescope Loan Program, which allows you to borrow a telescope using just your library card.

“The enthusiasm and energy were palpable throughout the whole Resort this weekend,”says Manning Park Resort’s general manager, Vern Schram.

By virtue of being 65 km away from any major city, avid astronomy buffs have long known that Manning Park has some of the darkest skies around, which makes it an excellent location for stargazing.

“Judging by the interest and success of this event, this is something we definitely want to build on,” says Schram. “We also intend to pursue Dark Sky designation through RASC to preserve this pristine alpine environment for stargazing.”
